9 Easy Ways to Improve Email Click-Through Rates

Click-through rate for emailsIf your emails are getting opened, awesome – you’re doing a lot right. If your emails are getting opened but have very low click-through rates (CTRs) – meaning no one is going to your website – not awesome. But fixable!

Here are 9 easy ways to improve your email CTRs:

1 – Don’t spam

This is probably the golden rule for email marketing, so it can’t be stressed enough: only send emails to people who signed up/opted in. Just because you met someone and have their business card does not give you permission to add them to your email distribution list.

2 – Don’t overwhelm

An email a day makes the subscribers go away. The more you email your list, the more clutter you are creating in inboxes everywhere – and the more annoying you’ll be.

3 – Segment your lists

Because your customers have different goals, challenges, and needs, segmenting them into different lists will allow you to create more relevant – and therefore more valuable and interesting – emails for each segment.

4 – Keep it short

Cut right to the chase in your emails – let them know why you’re emailing them and what they should do. If you have more than one message to share, create more than one email.

5 – Use humor

I don’t care who your target market is, everyone likes to laugh and be entertained – even auditors at the IRS. Be humorous, light-hearted, and self-deprecating, and write your message the way you talk.

6 – Add clickable content

This might be obvious, but make sure you include clickable content in your emails. Highlight the links in text and in calls-to-action so they stand out, and check that the links work before you hit the send button.

7 – Optimize for mobile

Depending on the source, the numbers change, but one thing is for certain: people read their emails on their mobile phones. Make sure your emails are optimized for mobile, or your email will be deleted before it even loads.

8 – Time the emails

This is an interesting stat: a recent study showed that emails have higher CTRs on Fridays and that marketers earn higher revenue from emails sent between 8PM and midnight.

9 – Add social share buttons

Another recent study found that social sharing buttons in emails increased CTRs, so be sure you add yours.
