      What are small business owners’ hiring plans for 2014, and how do your plans compare to those of your peers? A recent study from Bank of America asked entrepreneurs about their plans for the coming year, and found that many business owners will be hiring new employees. Although nearly half (47 percent) of small business owners say finding qualified employees is difficult, almost one-third (31 percent) report planning to hire in the next 12 months. A whopping 82 percent of working Americans over 50 say it is at least somewhat likely they will work for pay in retirement, which is good news for your small business.             But not the kind of virus you’re thinking of. According to a new report by U.K. product-testing charity Which,  smartphones and tablets may carry “hazardous” levels of germs which could lead to vomiting, diarrhea and even e.coli infection. One iPad tested had 600 units of Staphylococcus aureus, which was more germs than you would find on an average toilet seat and creates toxins that can lead to food poisoning and was worse.               Hiring managers are planning on hiring more workers for the holiday season than last year, according to a survey commissioned by Snagajob. The survey showed 69 percent of hourly hiring managers plan on hiring this year, an increase of 6 percent from last year.                 Why are there so many part-time employees these days? Is it a lack of employment opportunities, employers worried about paying for benefits for full-time workers, or something completely different? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, seven in 10 retail employees are full-time employees, and two-thirds of those part-timers work part time by choice. Full-time employees tend to be the “experts” in the business and get promoted to management positions. Part timers prefer work with less time commitment because they have other jobs, family care issues, are students or are just starting out in their careers and need a flexible schedule. Read more…
