Women in Business Tip: When You’re Starting a Business, What Types Have the Most Longevity?

Debunking the myth that women-owned businesses don’t last as long as male-owned businesses, a recent Cornell University study showed that in many industries, women-owned businesses actually survive longer. Disputing the “Female Underperformance Hypothesis,” researchers found the most longevity in women-run educational services, clothing, gift-related businesses and dance studios. However, not all women-owned businesses with high survival rates were in industries we think of as typically “female”—for example, the alcohol sales and service industry had a high rate of longevity for women-owned businesses. Before the winner is chosen, 10 partnerships will participate in the competition’s finalist event, where they will pitch their business idea live in front of a panel of celebrity judges.
