Small Business Tip of the Day: The Truth About Part-Timers

Why are there so many part-time employees these days? Is it a lack of employment opportunities, employers worried about paying for benefits for full-time workers, or something completely different? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, seven in 10 retail employees are full-time employees, and two-thirds of those part-timers work part time by choice. Full-time employees tend to be the “experts” in the business and get promoted to management positions. Part timers prefer work with less time commitment because they have other jobs, family care issues, are students or are just starting out in their careers and need a flexible schedule. Read more…

Scammers are trying to fool Americans looking for health insurance information by setting up fake websites that look like the new health insurance exchanges.             In most cases, employees would jump at the chance to work from home, but could that benefit ultimately breed bad blood in your business? According to a survey from Kona, 70 percent of workers say they would rather telecommute than work in the office, and if you survey those between the ages of 35 and 44, the numbers are even higher (81 percent). However, in offices that allow employees to work away from the office, the survey found 57 percent of respondents said that allowing remote work spurred jealousy among those who didn’t enjoy the privilege; for workers over the age of 65, the numbers jump to 65 percent.               Small Business Tip of the Day: Social Phobia?

              Although more small businesses are using social media than last year, the numbers are still surprisingly low according to a survey by Newtek: The Small Business Authority. The survey found 57 percent of businesses have a Facebook or Twitter account, which is an increase of 10 percent over 2012 findings. The survey also found that business owners are rarely educated about risks involved with social media such as posting critical information that should not be put in the public eye. Read more…

                Is a Lack of Capital Holding Your Business Back?

                Small business owners are feeling positive about the future and are getting ready to grow their companies, a new report says. According to the latest  Main Street Pulse Report by OnDeck, a company that reports on the financial health of small and midsized businesses, nearly three-fourths (73 percent) of small business owners think that the economy is getting better. Acting on that confidence, one in five have added staff in the past six months, while two in five plan to do so over the next six months. Read more…
