How to Get Started With Live Video Streaming for Marketing

If you feel like all you’re hearing lately is live video streaming this and Periscope that, you’re not alone. Live video streaming is quickly gaining popularity, and it’s proving to be a great marketing tool, especially for small businesses.

Here’s your guide on how to get started. But first, let’s talk about why you should even bother. I’ve got three reasons for you.

  1. It’s not a fad

Periscope, which is owned by Twitter, just announced that is has surpassed 2 million daily active users and has more than 10 million total accounts. Not to be outdone, Facebook said it would allow all users with verified profiles (journalists, celebrities) to broadcast live video using Facebook Live.

  1. It’s so easy to do

Unlike podcasting or hosting a webinar, broadcasting live video requires very little setup and no editing, and it incurs zero production costs.

You’ll want to determine topics and promote your broadcast, of course, but actually starting the live video requires nothing more than a click. Once you’re done, you can save it and share it.

  1. It’s incredibly engaging

The ability to engage with other people in real-time is incredibly powerful and really fun. Periscope and Facebook Live are built for two-way conversations. In fact, it’s almost like being able to interact with your TV set. Instead of just passively watching something, you are part of the experience.

Got your attention? Great – here are five ways to use video streaming for marketing:

  1. Give mini-lessons

No matter what your expertise is, you can teach viewers a new skill. You can stand in front of a whiteboard or hold up notes you wrote on pieces of paper.

  1. Hold a Q&A

While I don’t recommend holding a free-for-all, ask-me-anything Q&A, you can definitely use live video streaming to freely share your industry knowledge on a specific topic.

  1. Broadcast an event

When you attend industry events or tradeshows, consider broadcasting seminar highlights or cool stuff you come across.

  1. Announce big company news

If you have big news to share with your clients, consider announcing it live so they can jump in and ask questions.

  1. Go behind-the-scenes

If you work in a really cool office or co-working space, take viewers for a tour. Introduce your employees and show off the views from your office.

Getting started is really easy. Here’s what to do:

  1. Pick an app, download it, and walk through the quick setup (I use Periscope).
  2. Then try it to see how it works. People will start watching, so just explain what you’re doing and what you’ll be using your broadcasts for.
  3. Brainstorm topics you think your audience will be most interested in.
  4. Choose a day and time for a weekly broadcast (if you really get into it, you could certainly broadcast more).
  5. Promote it on social media.
  6. And … you’re live! Have fun!
