When we talk about social media marketing, we tend to focus on the big five: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Pinterest. But they aren’t the only games in town. There are a lot of “small” social media networks out there, too, that while perhaps not as widely utilized by the masses, are extremely powerful in their own right and well worth considering for your marketing strategy.
Ultimately, whether you use these networks or not depends upon your goals and audience. Let’s take a look at them, along with your marketing options:
Digg is basically an interactive news discovery site. Users submit links on various topics to Digg, and others vote the information up or down.
How to use it for marketing: Share blog posts that cover trending topics and have a strong point of view.
Medium is an interactive and collaborative blogging site that features helpful advice, tips, and articles written by experts.
How to use it for marketing: Publish your own articles, even if they are published elsewhere. Because of the collaborative nature of Medium, you will get feedback on your ideas, making it a great place to test out new ideas and improve your writing.
Meerkat is a live-video streaming app. As soon as you open it, you are prompted to start your own feed.
Periscope is also a live-video streaming app (owned by Twitter), but it encourages watching feeds over creating your own – at least when you open it.
How to use them for marketing: Share experiences and must-attend events, especially if they are exclusive, fun, or just plain unusual.
Snapchat really taps into #FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). The app lets you send photos (add art and text if you want) that disappear after a few seconds (10 seconds max). Naturally, the user base is young.
How to use it for marketing: Post flash sales and scavenger hunts.
Tumblr is a visual microblogging platform that is heavily used by teens and young adults.
How to use it for marketing: Post images, short video clips, memes, GIFs, and other forms of viral content that encourage liking and sharing. You can curate content, of course, but be sure to create original content as well.
Vine is a mobile video-sharing app that is owned by Twitter, which makes it super easy to share more interesting content in your feed. Videos run on a continuous 6-second loop.
How to use it for marketing: Stick to entertainment-focused videos, which dominate Vine simply because they’re fun and easy to share.
