Small Biz Tip: Hire Outside the Box

Workers are retiring later than ever these days, according to a recent poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. A whopping 82 percent of working Americans over 50 say it is at least somewhat likely they will work for pay in retirement, which is good news for your small business. Consider hiring retirees looking to go back to work or work part-time. Workers in their retirement years usually have less responsibility at home (with the kids grown and gone) and more free time they can dedicate to your business. Plus, you’ll gain from their years of experience in the workplace. Remember not to condescend to older workers and make sure you have plenty of assimilation efforts to help all generations get along, especially if you employ twentysomething workers as well. (Added benefit to your business? Working longer means seniors will have more disposable income to spend on your products or services.)
