Small Biz Tip: Open All Night

For the first time in its 155-year history, Macy’s will be open on Thanksgiving at 8 p.m. Apparently the department store is giving in to a retail trend that is showing stores open even earlier than 12:01 a.m. on Black Friday. Is the hope to get more of the holiday dollars spent, or to send some other kind of message–and is that the right message for your small business? Before you hire extra workers or ask your employees to work all night on the holiday, take an informal survey of your customers to see if they would even care about such a move. Truthfully, you should have enough inventory to get you through the holidays without making customers make a mad dash for your store. Plus, with an ecommerce presence, your customer might be satisfied if they can get a good deal online.
