For the first time in its 155-year history, Macy’s will be open on Thanksgiving at 8 p.m. Apparently the department store is giving in to a retail trend that is showing stores open even earlier than 12:01 a.m. on Black Friday. Is the hope to get more of the holiday dollars spent, or to send some other kind of message–and is that the right message for your small business? Before you hire extra workers or ask your employees to work all night on the holiday, take an informal survey of your customers to see if they would even care about such a move. How Will Mobile Affect Your Holiday Sales?

How will mobile devices affect your ecommerce site or retail store’s holiday sales this year? The percentage of consumers planning to do most of their Black Friday shopping online is up to 30 percent this year, compared with 25 percent last year, according to an Accenture’s 2013 Holiday Shopping Survey, and mobile will play an important role. Some 19 percent of consumers will use their tablets for shopping (either research or purchasing) this holiday season, up from 15 percent in 2012, and 18 percent will use their smartphones, up from 14 percent. More than half (55 percent) of shoppers say they are likely to shop on Black Friday this year, an increase from 53 percent in 2012 and 44 percent in 2011. Read more…
