You know shoppers are using smartphones and tablets to shop for products—but did you know just how pervasive the behavior is becoming? The 2013 Social and Mobile Commerce Consumer Report has some insights into how mobile devices are changing the way your customers shop. The study reports that more than half (55 percent) of all retail-related time spent online begins on either a smartphone or a tablet, with just 45 percent of retail Internet time originating from a desktop or laptop computer. If you’re looking to increase your mobile commerce numbers, apparently it’s better to focus on the smartphone platform over tablets–at least for now. comScore’s latest data shows that ecommerce spending has surpassed $10 billion, but for the first half of 2013, smartphones earned a higher share (6 percent) of total digital commerce than tablets did (3. 5 percent). Almost three out of five U.S. online buyers surveyed by Adroit Digital and research company Toluna say they have noticed ads popping up online for products they have looked up on other sites. This bodes well for online retailers using retargeted ads to remind shoppers of recent shopping searches. Although consumers don’t necessarily translate those searches into purchases, the survey found 30 percent had a positive or very positive reaction to retargeted ads, while only 11 percent had a negative reaction. Although consumers seem to getting more comfortable using their mobile devices to make purchases, according to the 2013 Mobile Con­sumer Insights study by Jumio and Harris Inter­ac­tive, shop­ping cart aban­don­ment con­tinues to be a major issue for ecommerce businesses. Sixty-eight percent of smart­phone and tablet owners have attempted to make a pur­chase on their device; however, 66 percent have failed to com­plete a trans­ac­tion due to obsta­cles encoun­tered during checkout. Although con­sumers like the con­ve­nience of mobile shop­ping, one issue is that most either are still not com­fort­able entering their credit card infor­ma­tion, or find it too dif­fi­cult to enter the information on their device.
