Are you feeling good about your business’s prospects for the coming year? You’re not alone. U.S. small business owners are feeling more optimistic about their futures than they have been at any time since the Great Recession hit in 2008, a recent Gallup poll shows. Although small business owners’ spirits still haven’t reached pre-recession levels, The Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index improved to +25 in July, up from +16 in the second quarter of this year. Consumers Are Ready to Spend on Luxury Products and Services

As the economic recovery begins to gain steam, more Americans are feeling confident about their purchasing power. They’re so confident, in fact, that interest in buying luxury products and services is on the rise among affluent customers at all household income levels and even among the not-so-affluent consumer. The Shullman Luxury and Affluence Monthly Pulse conducted by the Shullman Research Center says about one-third (37 percent) of U.S. adults with household incomes of $75,000 or more plan to buy a luxury product or service within the next 12 months. If you’re a restaurant owner worried that raising your menu prices could mean losing important customers, maybe you should stop worrying. According to a survey conducted by supply chain cooperative SpenDifference, 90 percent of chain restaurants anticipate raising their prices this year by an average of 1. 6 percent, and one-third of respondents expect to increase prices by 2 percent or more. The latest quarterly forecast from the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) indicates that business travel spending should see continued growth throughout 2013—especially in domestic travel. Business travel spending for 2013 is expected to reach $273.3 billion–an upgrade from last quarter’s forecast of $268.3 billion–an upgrade from last quarter’s forecast of $268.5 billion for the year. But according to the latest Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, Americans are more optimistic about the economy than they have been since the recession began. How are small business owners feeling about their companies’ success nearly halfway through 2013? More than half (60 percent) are satisfied with their businesses’ financial performance, according to a new TD Bank survey of more than 600 U.S. small business owners. However, small businesses still face some challenges as the economy recovers. The biggest challenges small business owners foresee for 2013 are growing their businesses (51 percent), dealing the economic environment (45 percent) and managing cash flow (34 percent). Read more…
