If have your alcohol license and you’re trying to attract both men and women (and who isn’t?), then you’d better have both beer and wine choices on your drinks menu. While 20 years ago, beer was the drink of choice for most people, a recent Gallup poll reports that today, 53 percent of men prefer beer while 52 percent of women prefer wine. More findings from the poll: Some 60 percent of Americans say they drink an alcoholic beverage at least occasionally, and women aren’t the only ones expressing a preference for wine–younger adults are, too. If you think Millennial consumers, fast-food-crazy teens or young, trendy couples are the best bets to target as customers for your restaurant, think again. A study by The NPD Group earlier this year says visits to restaurants by Baby Boomers and those age 65 and up have risen over the last five years, while restaurant visits by Millennials are on the decline. NPD says Boomers and 65-plus consumers (who they dubbed “Mature Traditionalists”) are visiting restaurants more often than they did before the recession began in 2008. Read more…

According to a survey conducted by supply chain cooperative SpenDifference, 90 percent of chain restaurants anticipate raising their prices this year by an average of 1. 6 percent, and one-third of respondents expect to increase prices by 2 percent or more. While they’re not yet at their peak earning power since they’re just starting out in the workplace, Millennials are valuable restaurant customers simply by virtue of the fact they’re likely to eat out more often than many other demographics. Are you a restaurant owner debating whether to add more healthy items to your menu? You might want to think twice, according to a new report from The NPD Group. The study found that, rather than picking healthier menu items when dining out, customers who are trying to eat healthy are more likely to cut out an item (such as dessert), order water instead of another beverage, and order smaller portions. The study, Healthy at Foodservice–Consumer Expectations Put in Perspective, found the number-one choice healthy diners were likely to make was ordering a salad (39 percent). Read more…
