For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been working on a project for a client that requires me to visit graduate school websites and find basic information on their MBA programs – what makes them different, what their focus is, and how the program is structured. So far, I’ve been to nearly a hundred sites, and I’ve see the good, the bad, and the truly ugly when it comes to finding the information I need. In a sea of millions of business websites, getting potential customers to visit your site instead of your competitor’s is a huge accomplishment. Don’t count out baby boomers when designing your website for research and shopping. In a 2013 poll for business technology consultant Infosys conducted by KRC Research and Vanson Bourne, two-thirds of U.S. Internet users aged 50 to 69 agreed “strongly” with the statement, “When making a big or expensive purchase, I search online to compare prices across stores or retailers. ” And, while younger consumers do research on their smartphones while they are actually in the store, boomers are more likely to do pre-purchase research online before they even step out their doors, with most of them are doing the research on their desktop computers. Consumers blur the lines when it comes to their mobile devices, using tablets and smartphones for research and information both business and personal. An IDG Global Solutions (IGS) survey found 37 percent of respondents use their personal tablet for business and 41 percent use their personal smartphones for business. The survey, which included participants in 43 countries, predicts by June 2014, more than 57 percent of consumers will rely on smartphones during business hours to read tech news; 47 percent will use them to research tech products and services; 45 percent will use them to read tech newsletters; 40 percent will use them to compare products and services; and 40 percent will use them to visit vendor sites for product information.
