Women in Business Tip: Do Looks Count?
women in business

First impressions include physical attractiveness, but do your looks matter when you’re trying to secure funding? Possibly—but not in the way you think. Women still have less luck pitching to venture capitalists than do men, and one study showed that even when pitching the same ideas, women get less funding than men. That same study reports that attractive men are even more likely to get funding—but surprisingly, attractive women actually fared worse than unattractive women. If stereotyping (i.e., that pretty women can’t be intelligent) extends to getting investment capital, women business owners have to work that much harder to convince venture capitalists that their ideas are worth paying attention to. Confidence and an aura of power can help turn around negative perceptions.
