According to a recent abstract: The demand for employees trained in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields continues to increase, yet the number of Millennial students pursuing STEM degrees is not keeping up with demand. What can you do to encourage women in these fields (and find female employees with this background for STEM jobs)?
- Start a small scholarship for students pursuing a college education in STEM. All students want scholarships, no matter how small. Set up a scholarship by deciding on the criteria, how much you want to give and a rating system to pick a winner.
- Create an internship program for STEM students in local high schools and colleges. Make sure you know the laws about internships in your state.
- Pay for part or all of a current employee’s education in STEM classes.
When recruiting, play up the fact you are a woman-owned business and add the bonus of giving employees flexibility and your understanding of work/life balance. Studies show these things are important to all Millennials looking for work in any field.
