According to The 2013 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report commissioned by American Express OPEN, of the 8.6 million women-owned businesses nationwide, the greatest number of women-owned forms is naturally in the most populous states. California has the most women-owned firms and is the only state with over 1 million women-owned businesses. After California, the states with the most women-owned businesses are Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois, Georgia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Ohio and Michigan. Does that mean you should pack it up and move to one of these states? Not necessarily. The better bet is a state with the most growth in the number, employment and revenues of women-owned firms. The states with the fastest growth in the number of women-owned firms over the past 16 years are: Georgia (up 112 percent), Texas (93 percent), North Carolina (91 percent), Louisiana (94 percent), Nevada (84 percent), Mississippi (77 percent), Utah (73 percent), Maryland (71 percent), New York (70 percent) and Florida (also 70 percent).
