What you can learn from the most powerful woman in business? If the woman is Mary Barra, the new General Motors CEO and the first woman CEO of a major automaker, the answer is “a lot.” Barra received the “most powerful” honor from Fortune magazine for many reasons, two being the international scope of her business and her standing in the business community. Her appointment and honor will influence young women to pursue a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) career path. She also has to lead a company that was once forced to file Chapter 11 back to the top—and she’s up for the challenge. According to coworkers, what can you learn from Barra? Be a great listener; make it a practice to regularly challenge the status quo; and “do every job you’re in like you’re going to do it for the rest of your life and demonstrate that [level of] ownership of it.”
